five sentence fiction :: distance

He sat down at his desk, the computer open in front of him, text books to the left, stacks of notes to the right. His fingers hovered over the keyboard as he willed the words to come, not for the first time. His hands slumped down onto the keys, and his head dropped back in defeat. No matter how he tried, thoughts of Lauren kept crowding out his meticulous revision and distracting him from what he should be doing. He reached for the phone, pulled up her number, then turned it face down on the desk, and stared at the computer once more.

I’m linking up today for Five Sentence Fiction – Distance – the prompt word (distance) helped inspired this scene from Paul’s perspective, about the beginning of the distance between himself and Lauren. I’m really enjoying working on their story as part of Camp NaNoWriMo!

    You’ve got the visuals down. The imagery is strong and clear and you make it easy to slip into your character’s skin.

    If only it were that easy to forget someone… putting the phone face down. Nice one.

      Thanks Sandra, this scene ties in with my previous L&P snippet, with the increasing distance between them.
