out of the box {writing challenge}

I was chatting to the lovely Car the other day, and we were lamenting a lack of blogging mojo and how we sometimes go through slumps where it seems stale and all too hard. Her particular sticking point was her writing blog. And so I suggested maybe a challenge to get her mind out of her WIP and pushing the edges of her box might be just what she needed. And thus the “Out Of The Box” challenge was born.

Each Monday I’ll post a challenge designed to push her/your comfort zone. A mix of stuff from the WIP and something new. Different styles. Different settings. Different lengths. The result is due as a link in the comment section here on the Thursday of the same week. I’m mainly posting as accountability for Car, but if you’d like to play along too, we’d love to have you!

WEEK ONE: Day In The Life – pick a character. It can be a new character, or and existing one. The only character it can’t be is the main character of a current WIP. Tell me about their day. It can be in any format you wish. Diary. Letters. Email. Any length. For new characters, you may if you wish include up to 150 words of backstory if it will make the main piece make more sense.

Ready. Set. Write.

(Want a button to make it feel more official? I made one. Mainly for an excuse to do some calligraphy and play with Illustrator, but hey. Why not.)

    Define main character? I have two but my story to date is so far predominantly written by one character only. I need to beef it up and add some from my second character (who should be my first main, but it hasn’t evolved liked that yet)

    Can I use this to attempt some insight into second main? or should I go for a completely different character altogether?

    Its FINISHED! Not a very good piece, I attempted writing “list poetry” but it ended up rhyming and I need to tweak a few words. Will post it tomorrow! Now onto prompt #2.
