…blogtober day 8 :: give me a home among the gum trees…

It was still dark, and well before my scheduled alarm, when I woke this morning. I lay there in the semi-silence, wondering if it was worth trying to get back to sleep, but in the end, decided my brain had the right of it, and slipped out of bed, careful not to disturb my still-sleeping daughter beside me. As the kettle boiled, I watched the dark city out the kitchen windows. In the tower next to me, a few fellow early birds were flicking on lights and starting their day also. For the most part though, it was still, and dark. I sat, took a couple of sips, but within moments I was on my feet again. The coffee slowly disappeared as I unpacked dishwashers and packed eskies and repacked dishwashers. Collected charging cables from the various power points.

The majority of the work done, I gently roused the children from their deep, early morning sleeps, and cajoled them into clothes and into collecting backpacks and shopping bags. Down the elevator one last time. Tetris the bags. Drop off the keys. Two right turns, and we were on the highway home.

Home. Oh how delightful it is to be back in our cozy little cabin. The bags are all unpacked. We’ve been for a tour through the garden to admire the husband’s handiwork while we’ve been away. Lunch has been had and IKEA hauls have been sent to the storage container. Everything is tidy-ish and normalish. I can feel the crafty mojo flowing back in already, at the same pace I can feel the stress of the city leaving me. I’m looking forward to a quiet, chilled day tomorrow, making all the things.

Give me my home among the gum trees, with lots of fruit trees, a pig or two, lots of chookies too, a grumpy cat in the house, dogs jumping out the front, and my fave knitting chair…
