…simple storytelling…
There’s something magical about photos. Freezing a moment in time, in just the right way, so that when I look back in years to come, I can be brought right back to that very instant. My collection of cameras is a little bit crazy – a few DSLRS, a film SLR, a polaroid, instax, two or three toy film cameras…and lets not get me started my vintage camera collection! When it comes to instagram, though, I don’t want to spend all day on photos to share my projects. Living in a tiny house also means I don’t have a Pinterest perfect space, nor a lot of space for props and equipment. Over the last 18 months, I’ve gotten very good at streamlining my process to use only my phone and natural light for my insta photos.

Enter: Photo Skills Boost for Instagram. When I first zoomed with Rachel from Crafty Monkies, we were kicking around a few class ideas, and towards the end of my call, I mentioned my photography background. Not long after we got off the call, there was a message waiting for me – would I be interested in doing a phone photo class for my first run with them? I said yes before I had much of a chance to overthink it, and we got to work.
Originally titled a much less SEO-friendly “Simple Social Storytelling”, this three hour class is for crafters of any persuasion, who want to give their photos a little extra razzle dazzle, but don’t want to over complicate things. It’s all about telling the story of your project, in a simple and easy to create way. We’ll take a deep dive into the development of an instagram photo, from making the most of limited space, to layout and styling, to maximising natural light, through to editing to make your photos pop. I will take you behind the scenes so you can follow along every step of the way, and start to apply the concepts to your own photos. I’m even throwing it back and showing my first flat lay photos and offering a critique of each so you can see what worked, what didn’t and how I fixed it.

I’m really excited for this new opportunity! Because of the time difference with the UK, we are running it a bit differently to the usual Crafty Monkies class. Instead of the usual fully live class, I will be prerecording all my layouts, and during the class, talking you through the footage. This means we can stop and pause and go over information to ensure I’m fully clear before we move on. There will also be the chance for students to submit photos for me to edit live in class, and to share layouts for feedback live.
