Easter 2025

Our crazy 2025 Easter weekend wrapped up last night with a bang – literally. As we drove home from the airport where we dropped Bear off to fly home to Sydney, the night sky flashed white and then brilliant blue, as we saw a meteor burn up and explode on it’s way to land a couple of hours north just over the Queensland border. The colour the sky turned was insanely vibrant, a neon blue that almost turned night back into day.

(I will confess that seeing that then immediately crossing a creek, oozing with dense fog spilling across the roadway, had me wondering if we’d accidentally become the main characters of a dodgy horror movie)

We kicked off on Thursday night, heading over to the airport for pick up after work. Of course the silly plane was delayed, when I wanted was to give my boy a big hug, get hime some dinner, and drive him home and tuck him up in his own bed where he belongs. We stalked FlightRadar until he landed and he was ours again. By 10.30, we’d picked up some take away, driven home, and with all my chickens back in the nest, we enjoyed some quiet family time just all existing in the same space. They watched telly and chatted, I got the hot cross buns ready for their final overnight rise.

Our late night came back to bite us the next morning, when we were up and moving nice and early. I had to get the buns baking, and get the final cleaning done before our guests arrived. We enjoyed a quiet brunch with the fresh hot cross buns (and mimosas for me with glittery ice cubes because sometimes you’ve got to be a little bit fancy!). The guests started arriving from 11, and as we sat and chatted, I knitted on a sock I was working on for a test.

On Saturday, we hosted breakfast for our guests before they headed off, and we did too, packing the esky and the picnic set and heading up the mountain for a little day trip. Bear wanted to go bushwalking, but Boy2 is currently out of action with a knee injury so he and I were on campsite and lunch cooking duty, while Mr Barefoot, Bear, Butterfly & Beetle went on a two hour walk. At the picnic ground, Boy2 and I played cards and worked in our sketchbooks and I knitted and read while he did time as the BBQ Master (his tong clicking skills are coming along particularly well). A picnic lunch, a walk to the creek, and we were in the car headed for home again, and then out for tea at the local microbrewery who were doing a fish burger special – Barra burgers are a running joke/story in our house, so we couldn’t miss the opportunity!

Sunday of course was Easter, and the Easter bunny had been asked to provide a Bluey style clue hunt. The kids went hunting, we had another coffee, and once they had divvied up their haul, there was a second hunt that Beetle had set up for Girrafey (his favourite teddy). The rest of the day passed in a has of chocolates and more hot cross buns and mimosas and working on an old quilt only to find the backing didn’t fit so I sulked in my egg chair with a book.

All too soon, it was Monday, and we were preparing once again to send our boy back to the big smoke. I cast off my sock while Butterfly made us a beautiful home cooked brunch – croissants and danishes and muffins and pastries and cinnamon scrolls, all from scratch. A nice strong coffee for me to ward off the effects of a busy weekend and not enough sleep, and then we were packing up and hitting the road for the drive to the airport. I got a second sock cast on and worked on it in the car, we grabbed some lunch, we hugged our boy and watched him walk to the plane and waved as the plane took off. By the time we’d gotten into town from the airport, bought some takeaway for tea on the road, and made our way across town to the road to home, he was touching down in Sydney, literally as we passed the 100 signs and were on our way.

Most of the trip home was in darkness (or close enough), so I read for a bit. I chatted as we came back into service and learned the pope had died. Out of mobile range again and then the sky exploded in vibrant blue, signalling the end of a joyous, exhausting, relaxing, crazy, wonderful, frustrating, glorious weekend.

Happy Easter friends, He is risen! I hope your long weekend was magical.
