WIP Wednesday :: bookish knitters

Just when I think I have enough wraps, shawls, and scarves, along comes another Bookish Knitter’s Society release from Say! Little Hen and whoops I have a new project. I did have good intentions this time, I swear. But then it was so pretty and I needed to do an order for some extra yarn for the socks I was knitting at the time and well one wouldn’t want to waste that postage cost, would one?

This is my third volume of the Society – the first was in 2022, and another in 2023. I skipped the 2024 volume (see, I do have some self restraint), but was tempted by the large wrap style + the chance to finally have a crack at mohair held double. The book was conveniently available at our library, and I had it borrowed, read, and passed on to Butterfly for her to read before I’d even cast on.

Slowly, slowly, it’s coming together. I made solid progress during our May holidays at the coast. I poked away over the long weekend. It got put away for our road trip – red dirt + light coloured mohair are not a great mix. Last night, I picked it up again, and over an episode of The Mentalist, I got section four finished, and section five started.

Much like my crochet blanket, I find the pattern isn’t conducive to mindless rhythm. There’s bobbles to make and switches between stitches to create ripples. It’s a project to work on in my own time, not while chatting with my husband or watching a show with my daughter (we’ve just started watching Wonderland together). It’s for late evenings with a familiar show in the quiet after everyone is in bed, when I can have half a brain on each of the project and the show. Now I can see the home stretch though, I’m determined to power through and get it done by the end of the month.

I’m loving the texture and the fuzziness. The soft colours of the base yarn add just enough interest but are subtle enough it’s almost neutral. The I-cord edge is satisfyingly neat. While not probably a pattern I would have chosen without the Society as a lure, it’s been a fun exercise in learning new skills (the bobbles), and new ways of combining stitches (the ripples). I can’t wait to have it off the needles and on the blocking mats, and then onto the junior hockey sidelines.

Today, we are still finding our feet after our annual July road trip. The washing is almost up to date. The housework schedule is almost back on track. The school work is getting caught up. The cake Madame Butterfly baked last night is almost gone. I’m thinking a cuppa and a slice while I supervise maths is in order. Out on the front deck, the sun is curling around towards my egg chair so I might be able to get a chapter of my book in when it’s break time. I have photos to print and photos to edit and ideas to write down. The rains are due back tomorrow so today is all about making the most of the sun and the mojo it brings. There’s a few projects tickling my crafty bone so I might try and sneak those in too. Let’s see how we go…please play nicely Wednesday!
